Charles Stewart Parnell [Charles Stewart Parnell]
(1846–91) an Irish politician who led the campaign for Home Rule in Ireland from 1877 to 1890. He then suddenly lost all his public support because it was revealed that he had been having a sexual relationship with another man’s wife for ten years. He was known by his supporters as ‘the uncrowned king of Ireland’. Parnell is often mentioned in the books of James Joyce, who admired him greatly.
